“Kart-um Downs” was the original name of Sandy Hook Speedway.
The track was created & named by Charles Mace Jr. Early in the 1960’s the planning & building of the speedway began. 1964 is the official born date that is referenced due to that being the first year there are records of races being held. It is unknown at what point the name officially changed to Sandy Hook Speedway. We have heard it was called Kart-um Downs into the 1970's. The track went through quite a few changes & many additions over the years. In 1997 the track was re-designed & paved; that introduced the 25 degree banked corner. There have been many national, regional, state & divisional championships held here. Oval racing was extremely popular here & those events were so large the oval races had their own separate race days from the road course. Road course series has since taken over & dominated the track's activities. Recently oval racing has begun to gain popularity on asphalt ovals. We felt it was the right time to create this special 3 race event that is being called... "Kart-um Downs" Triple Crown Oval & Road Course Championship. It will have 6 road course classes & 3 oval specific classes per event. Champions will be crowned for each class including these three events! |
