The track was created & named by Charles Mace Jr. Early in the 1960’s the planning & building of the speedway began. 1964 is the official born date that is referenced due to that being the first year there are records of races being held. It is unknown at what point the name officially changed to Sandy Hook Speedway. We have heard it was called Kart-um Downs into the 1970's. We have also learned the facility was referred to as a few different names just depending on the series that was being run at that time. - (12-21-24) UPDATE! Long time racer Kevin Shive shared with us a WKA Parking pass from a National event where Kart-Um Downs was stamped on the parking pass from June 10th, 1984. - (5-16-2025) UPDATE! Recently information was shared in 1976 the track was called Bel Air Raceway. Course direction was being run clockwise at that time & this is 20 years before the track would be re-paved with the banked corner being added. - The track went through quite a few changes & many additions over the years. In 1997 the track was re-designed & paved; that introduced the 25 degree banked corner. - 2023 the Maryland Sprint Series was continued on under an updated series name. Kart-um Downs Triple Crown with a 3 race series to determine the MD State Champions. - 2024 is the 60th year of racing at Sandy Hook Speedway. The Grand Slam Kart Series is a meld of continuing traditions, local heritage, local sports & Kart-um Downs History. 4 races on 4 different track configurations available at Sandy Hook. 2 races run the current normal counter-clockwise & the other 2 races run in the direction the track was exclusively run, clockwise! So there are 3 track configurations that most of today's racers at Sandy Hook have never competed on. 2025 the Kart-Um Downs is being modified in to a Grand Slam Sprint Championship weekend! All the details for the event will be "unveiled" at the awards banquet on January 26th. 4 track configs. - 2 days of racing - 1 Champion per class Can anyone win all 4 features to be a Grand Slam Champion? - Oval classes will only compete on Sunday with a special program to determine the series Champion! |
