DATES - FEES - REGISTRATION - CLASSES - SERIES RULES - RESULTS - POINTS - ABOUT“Kart-um Downs” was the original name of Sandy Hook Speedway.
The track was created & named by Charles Mace Jr. Early in the 1960’s the planning & building of the speedway began. 1964 is the official born date that is referenced due to that being the first year there are records of races being held. It is unknown at what point the name officially changed to Sandy Hook Speedway. We have heard it was called Kart-um Downs into the 1970's. (12-21-24 UPDATE! Long time racer Kevin Shive shared with us a WKA Parking pass from a National event where Kart-Um Downs was stamped on the parking pass from June 10th, 1984.) The track went through quite a few changes & many additions over the years. In 1997 the track was re-designed & paved; that introduced the 25 degree banked corner. There have been many national, regional, state & divisional championships held here. Oval racing was extremely popular here & those events were so large the oval races had their own separate race days from the road course. Road course series has since taken over & dominated the track's activities. 2023 the Maryland Sprint Series was continued on under an updated series name. Kart-um Downs Triple Crown with a 3 race series to determine the MD State Champions. 2024 is the 60th year of racing at Sandy Hook Speedway. The Grand Slam Kart Series is a meld of continuing traditions, local heritage, local sports & Kart-um Downs History. 4 races on 4 different track configurations available at Sandy Hook. 2 races run the current normal counter-clockwise & the other 2 races run in the direction the track was exclusively run, clockwise! So there are 3 track configurations that most of today's racers at Sandy Hook have never competed on. 2025 the Kart-Um Downs is being modified in to a Grand Slam Sprint Championship weekend! All the details for the event will be "unveiled" at the awards banquet on January 26th. 4 track configs. - 2 days of racing - 1 Champion per class Can anyone win all 4 features to be a Grand Slam Champion? - Oval classes will only compete on Sunday with a special program to determine the series Champion! |
